## What is a skill tree?

Skill trees are visuals used to track learning new skills. In some video games you earn experience points by completing actions. Using these experience points you can unlock new skills which in turn open up previously unavailable skills.

![Example of a skill tree](https://3799738736-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-legacy-files/o/assets%2F-MRSR5EnP7JimT7L86C5%2F-MTTr4CeVCLKeNxp7zGG%2F-MTTsHN2GGdVWbU-NJfu%2Fimage.png?alt=media\&token=c7cf2688-8b73-464e-94a7-2b127bb78b1d)

Typically the top row of the tree is where the most basic skills start. Once you unlock one skill it usually opens up more skills following it.

## Why a skill tree?

**People are good learning but bad at putting learning into practice.** Skill trees based on actions reward action and help people track a sort of progress.

**People don't know where to start.** Tell someone to follow Jesus and they might not know where to start. Skill trees give you somewhere to start. Even the best NASCAR driver had to start with the basics. Like learning how to read road signs and which pedal to use when driving (and stopping!), these basic "skills" aim to give everyone a strong foundation for learning to follow Jesus.

**People have different motivations and desires.** Skill trees allow people to choose where God is moving in their lives while sharing in having the same plate of options.
